Elsa and Arno got out early to get good seats. Another record crowd attending.

My apologies to Nina Howatt that she and Flora Goodridge were partners in  the historic first shuffleboard match of 2002.  Remember Nina is part of the Pinto and Santa Maria team.

The entrance fee for the tournament is $1 per participant.  The Thorpe’s are collecting.  Please be sure to pay up.

Next match is Tuesday @ 4 p.m. then on Wednesday four matches 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and at 4 p.m. What a full day.

Frances Rockey came dressed to play in a very sexy outfit. Maybe she should borrow our Cat House Madam’s (Virginia Walsh) shoes.

Ruth Broder and Bill Goodridge finally got to be a plus 15 before being succumbed by a score of 102 by Francis Rocky and Dick Thorpe.

THE GAME OF SHUFFLEBOARD.
1st Episode
Deck games on the Atlantic Liners began at the turn of the Century. SB was the grand daddy of all deck sports. The game was derived from “shoveboard” of Shakespeare’s time, played with coins or disks that were “shoved along a board” in an attempt to cover numbers at the other end. When the game was transferred from land to sea by White Star passengers in the eighteen eighties, the etymology was not surprisingly distorted to shovelboard since the maritime version involved the use of shovel-like sticks with which to propel oversize disks along the deck. Inevitably, “shovel” became “Shuffle” and the game a permanent Atlantic Ocean fixture.
The second episode of this historical article will be published in the next communication.
